Dr. Flanum is a dual fellowship trained orthopedic surgeon specializing in minimally invasive spine surgery and sports spine medicine.

His passion is caring for patients who are experiencing a spine health issue and sharing his knowledge and passion for providing the best possible care with the next generation of health care providers.

He treats a broad range of professional and Olympic athletes as well as lifelong weekend warriors with a full spectrum approach to maximizing function and return to an active lifestyle.  He continues to teach future health care providers including pre-med students, medical students and residents.

Dr. Flanum was the first surgeon in Alaska to perform the minimally invasive IO Flex lumbar decompression and is passionate about motion preservation and disc replacement surgery.

In addition to his passion for clinical medicine, he has served as President of the Alaska Orthopedic Society, Chair of the Alaska Regional Orthopedic Department and previously served on the Board of the Alaska Mountain Rescue Group and Mountaineering Club of Alaska.  He currently serves as the Alaska representative on the Board of Counselors to the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons.

He is the proud father of four and a lifelong athlete with commitment to staying at the forefront of professional and personal challenges.  His hobbies include backpacking, hiking, mountain and road biking as well as continued exploration of all of Alaska’s amazing recreational opportunities.
