About
Dr. Ken Thomas is an ethical and patient-focused orthopedic surgeon specializing in treating complex orthopedic trauma, pediatric orthopedics, limb deformity, and infections. He is board-certified, fellowship-trained, and has been helping Alaskans since 2011.
As part of the OPA team, Dr. Thomas provides compassionate care for adult and pediatric patients with complex orthopedic trauma or congenital conditions. He is devoted to restoring his patients’ function and maximizing their quality of life.
He is committed to helping others both in Alaska around the world. Over the years, he’s done humanitarian work in Nigeria, as a limb deformity course instructor, and throughout Haiti with the Haiti Clubfoot Project, teaching and training other physicians on the Ponseti Method of clubfoot correction. He also returned to Haiti on a post-earthquake orthopedic trauma mission in 2010.
Dr. Thomas began his career as a carpenter in New Jersey. He earned a bachelor of science degree in civil engineering from the New Jersey Institute of Technology. He worked as a civil engineering designer but knew medicine was his true calling. So, he returned to carpentry with the long term goal of becoming a doctor.
While working on homes during the day, Dr. Thomas attended night school working towards his goal of being a doctor. The next step was attending medical school at the University of Colorado School of Medicine. He then went on to do an orthopedic surgery residency at Hamot Medical Center in Erie, PA, followed by a fellowship in orthopedic trauma surgery at the Reno Orthopedic Center in Reno, NV. Upon completion of his fellowship, he joined the orthopedic surgery department at Alaska Native Medical Center. There, he served as an orthopedic trauma surgeon in ANMC’s Level I trauma center.
Today when he’s not helping others at OPA, he enjoys spending time with his family, bicycling, woodworking, reading, and hiking around Alaska.

Patient Testimonials
Very fun, personable, cordial doctor who made my shy daughter feel calm and comfortable. He was really confident and knowledgeable and made me feel reassured about explaining my daughter’s complicated health issues as well as helping us figure out what the next steps are to achieve her treatment goals.
